Syria’s transitional government has appointed Maysaa Sabreen as the interim governor of the country’s central bank, making her the first woman to lead the institution since its foundation in 1953.

A department manager at the Central Bank of Syria told news agency Agence France-Presse on December 30 of the appointment. The official said Sabreen would lead the central bank “in a caretaker capacity” and did not specify when her tenure would end.

Since 2018, Sabreen has served as the first deputy
