Hungary’s PM chooses finance minister as MNB governor – Central Banking



Appointment of Mihály Varga likely to improve bank’s relations with government after recent tensions

Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orbán today (November 29) picked Mihály Varga to be the next governor of the country’s central bank.

Orbán, along with other prominent political figures, had strongly hinted over recent months that Varga would succeed György Matolcsy. The prime minister made his choice clear during a radio interview this morning.

The prime minister said Matolcsy’s 12-year tenure had been “excellent” and that he was “grateful for his work”. He highlighted efforts by the Central Bank
