Obituary: Tito Mboweni, 1959–2024 – Central Banking

Tito Mboweni, former governor of the South African Reserve Bank and anti-apartheid campaigner, died on October 12.

In a statement, the Sarb said Mboweni had died after a short illness. “Mr Mboweni’s passing is a great loss to South Africa, the continent and the global economic community,” it added.

Mboweni led the Sarb for a decade after being appointed as its first black governor in 1999. He oversaw governance and communications reforms, and led the central bank as it adopted inflation targeting
