Opposition says appointment of José Luis Escrivá would throw bank’s independence into question

The Spanish government today (September 4) named José Luis Escrivá as the next governor of the Bank of Spain, despite controversy over the possible politicisation of the central bank.

Although Escrivá has a background in central banking, his critics have focused on the ministerial roles he has held since 2020. He is currently minister for digital transformation and public function in the Socialist Party government.
