Turkish president appoints ‘hawk’ as governor

Turkey’s central bank governor stepped down after just over six months in the role, with the president replacing her with one of her deputies. 

Hafize Gaye Erkan announced her resignation as Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) governor on January 2, denouncing what she called a smear campaign. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan then named Fatih Karahan, who has served as a CBRT deputy governor since July last year, to lead the central bank.
