EC proposes legal tender status for digital euro

The European Commission today (June 28) published a legislative proposal that would grant a future digital euro legal tender status.

The EC points out it only envisions a digital euro functioning alongside cash. Indeed, the proposal aims to safeguard the role of cash in the economy, ensuring it remains widely accepted as a means of payment and is accessible for people and businesses.
