People have used their vote to protest against a longstanding global political and economic system that has failed the vast majority.It is a paradigm that has eroded their living standards,destroyed jobs and working conditions and waged permanent war for resources and profit.The majority have taken the blame for systemic failure while they have watched the rich grow outrageously richer through criminal strategies like tax avoidance agreements.Populists like Donald Trump in the United States, Nigel Farage in the United Kingdom and Jean Marie Le Pen in France have declared themselves to be the authentic voice of their people.As a result, the political pendulum is making a huge swing to the far right.Despite impending trade wars, the virtual dictatorships of Russia and China should be comfortable with the new zeitgeist,more in line with their own outlooks. Turkey, Poland, Holland, Hungary and France are voting against their status quo.
The neoliberal experiment ushered in nearly forty years ago in Thatcher’s Britain, copied in Reagans’ US, and globalized through banking,financial and trade deregulation,is being swept away by a tsunami of angry populism. What are the origins of this perfect storm striking at almost the same time in so many different places? Like fascism and communism of the last century which rejected the traditional imperial monarchies rule around the world, who are the world’s voters now turning their anger to? The imperial like self-declared ‘elite’of super-rich bankers and corporations who meet each year at Davos and Bilderberg conferences to plan economic and political reality for the majority of the world’s population. Their previously behind the scenes surreptitious manipulation of the world’s politicians has been brought to public attention by non-traditional media and ‘hacktivists’, and people do not like what is being planned for them.
